Cooking With Kids

Daisy has asked for a "chair chair," to stand up and help me cook or prepare food every day over the past two weeks.  I always give her a large frosting spatula that she thinks is a knife and she is as happy as a clam.  I even help her cut little things with it occasionally so she is even more convinced that it is real...happy baby, happy mommy.  She loves to help me stir things on the stove (which is tricky but, we carefully make it happen), she loves to drop vegetables in the food processor and she loves to make burritos (see video).  She is so dang cute when she is "cooking," and I have heard that if you get kids involved in the preparation of the food that they are more likely to eat what is being prepared.  Well, so far this is statement is proving true for us.

I'm not gonna lie, it can be a really messy process to let a little one help in the kitchen so I usually reserve a special cooking time for Daisy that isn't the real cooking time.  That way I am relaxed and have more patience and time to let her do her thing.  We both really enjoy hanging out in the kitchen together these days.  Just last night she spent over an hour pretending to wash dishes in the kitchen sink.  I love when my little girl is happy and having a good time and I'm excited that we have a new thing to do together to break up the long days.
Do you like to let your kids help you when you cook?
using her knife spatula to "cut" an apple
Getting hungry after trying to cut her apple so the snacking begins. lol
Please excuse my morning hair and face...I'm trying to keep it real here:)...Well actually if I'm really being real I would admit to the fact that sometimes I look like this all day long simply because I don't feel like taking a shower, getting dressed or putting on makeup during the precious little nap break that I get once a day.  There...truth is out:).  What's great about little kids is that they don't know any different! lol
Someone is excited to make a veggie drink!
As long as I add a whole apple I can make just about any veggie mixture taste really delicious!
She really did like it!
Though you wouldn't know by the faces she is making...LOL
I love my little peanut head so so much.

    1. Can you be my test and let me know if this comment comes to you in an e-mail so that I know if it is working or not? I am replying to people's comments on the blog post but, I don't know if the responses are getting to them directly or not. And thanks for the comment friend! I always love when you visit our blog and yes, I think Daisy and Austin are going to be cooking buddies. Just wait till the day that they are old enough to cook for us and we all can go on a big group family vacation somewhere!! How fun will that be!!

    1. Aw, thanks friend! Our girls sound a lot alike and are so close in age. IT really has been fun to have Daisy wanting to help me (tricky at times too but, mostly fun:) and wanting to learn everything that I do. It's so amazing to watch a little person grow up! Oh and the recipe is always one whole apple (usually a gala or a non-sour apple), 3 average sized carrots, 2 celery stalks and sometimes I will throw in some spinach leaves though they don't produce much liquid. It's definitely a veggie drink but, the apple keeps it sweet enough to enjoy it. I also use broccoli stalks sometimes. The more greens the better! :). Do you have a juicer?

  6. Way too adorable Casey!!! I guess you could call me a bad mom- I try to keep the kids out of the kitchen as much as possible when I am in there. At least when I am baking. It's my zen time- to be in my own thoughts & concentrate on the recipe. However- now that the kids are a but older- when the hubs is not around to help me with dinner- I pick one kid to assist. But never all of them- it's hard to concentrate on everything I need to do when I am explaining each thing & why & then all the follow-up convo that happens from that. My kids are heavy talkers- nothing gets done when we have convos altogether.

  8. Such a cute and happy little helper! I let Sammy help wash the dishes from time to time (plus all of the water on the floor gives me an incentive to mop the kitchen on a regular basis, ha!), and I've given him flour to stir in a bowl but I know I need to let him get more involved--I think what's holding me back is the clean up part! :D

  9. First of all, she is so darn cute!
Second, I love that you're having her help in the kitchen. This is how they become open to new food ideas. It's also a little gateway to experiencing new cultures. So fun!
